His Holiness Thaye Dorje, the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, is the spiritual leader of the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism.

H.H. Karmapa was born in Tibet on May 6th 1983 and fled to India in 1994.

In March 1994, in accordance with a 900-year-old tradition, Thaye Dorje was enthroned as the 17th Karmapa by His Holiness the 14th Kunzig Shamar Rinpoche – the second most senior lama of the Karma Kagyu lineage – who had recognized him from childhood as the reincarnation of the 16th Karmapa.

In 2003, H.H. Karmapa Thaye Dorje, whose name means Limitless Immutable Activity of the Buddhas, received the title of Vidyadhara, the Knowledge Holder of the Sutras and Tantras, the whole teachings of the Buddha.

The Karmapas are the spiritual leaders of the longest uninterrupted lineage of Tibetan buddhism : the Karma Kagyu lineage. Tibetan Buddhism includes three other lineages: the Gelugpa (whose spiritual leader is the Dalai Lama), the Nyingmapa and the Sakyapa.

Thaye Dorje, H.H. the 17th Karmapa, is responsible for over 900 monasteries and meditation centres of the Kagyu lineage around the world.

Karmapa’s activity, based on the richness of Buddhist traditional values, aims to propose to all beings concrete solutions to contemporary problems and to help them open to their innate values: the compassion and wisdom that are our inner wealth and that will allow us to establish, on a personal and global level, long-lasting peace and serenity.

H.H. Karmapa is considered a fully enlightened being, prophesied by the Buddha: « in the Northern country will appear the one who increases virtue, the supreme spiritual friend. The one who possesses the greatest enlightened power, who has the greatest ascetic ability, who many will listen to ». He embodies all the qualities of Enlightenment and is considered a manifestation of Chenrezig, the Buddha of Compassion.

To meet the Gyalwa Karmapa creates a deep connection to Enlightenment.
